Boston to Austin: The last show in Austin

AUSTIN, TX and the road back home – Austin is everything people say it is and more, especially when you’re there during ACL and a Longhorns football game. We had an amazing time in town, not only playing at Hi-Lo, but also the night before. Ryan, Dave and I were able to get in a Gnarls Barkley concert at STUBBS BBQ as well as somehow find ourselves in an exclusive VIP after party. (long story) but one for the books. Big thanks to Michelle McWilliams?! Oh yeah, and in case you were wondering, Cee-Lo’s hands are as soft as they look.

This town does not stop and unless you attempt to stop yourself you could end up hurt. The streets are covered with young people with a blatant thirst for music and debauchery. The further we went from the town, the stronger my desire to go back became. It will be a long winter, but we are hopeful for March and SXSW (fingers crossed).

Driving back from Austin now. Been on the road for 13 hours. Now we’re actually driving through Memphis. We randomly saw a stray hound dog puppy on the side of the road a few minutes ago. It just hit me that Memphis was home to Elvis and Sun Records (Ain’t Nothing But a Hound Dog). We thought that was a cool coincidence. Next state will be West Virginia. ETA 4 hrs or so.

Just switched drivers. Ryan is driving now and I’m sitting gun. We’re currently doing a sing-a-long to “Show me Love”? A 90’s hit. However, just so we don’t come off as ungrateful blues fans, we spent the last 45 minutes or so listening to an AM radio special about the history of Robert Johnson and blues music. How unassumingly appropriate for where we are. How fortunate we are for having had this opportunity to travel to and through some of these towns. The day has been super long, but oddly enough at this point it all just feels normal? Scary…I know…

Gas stations are getting old and the food offerings don’t really seem to change. In fact, at the beginning of the trip I distinctly remember taking comfort in the fact that every Cracker Barrel looks EXACTLY the same. Now it’s become an unavoidable discomfort! And when we walk into one it seems as though we never actually left the one we were in 6 hrs ago.

I’ve been speaking with Dave and the guys from Otis Grove hourly. We’ve all given our respective vehicles names and ourselves trucker names (sounds a lot more fun than it is). Both crews have decided we would drive a straight shot from Texas. Sleep/drive/shotgun rotations. With three man rotations and the occasional stop, we are expected in around midnight Monday night.

Very excited to be playing CMJ Wednesday October 22nd at Trash Bar in Brooklyn (11 PM slot). And pumped about the Pianos Show this coming weekend. Much to be happy about on this end. I feel this experience was of great importance to us in ways I’m not sure were yet entirely aware of yet.

Boston to Austin: New Orleans

NEW ORLEANS, LA – New Orleans is a unique city. Its culture derives from African, Caribbean and French culture. I can taste it in the food. Hear it in the music. Smell it in the air. See it in the way people walk, talk, and treat each other. That being said, the band that we were supposed to play with, aptly named Monarch, was the antithesis of my expectations. Before they even got there, they were gone like the wind in which they fly. However, that didn’t stop us from a Monarch tribute set, which can only be described in three words: totally fuck rad. After which, we were completely drained and went to sleep with eager anticipation of the triumphant return of David.

Strolling around New Orleans during Wednesday afternoon, I felt in the mood to aimlessly guide myself into the unknown. The unknown being a large tree that we sat in and reminisced of the glory days of tree houses and little league.

Boston to Austin: Jared’s awake and Ryan’s shoe is gone

NASHVILLE, TN (Day 2) – Jared: After a few tosses and turns and several pillow adjustments, I finally give up on going back to sleep. The clock in the hotel room reads 8:34am. I need to think for a second what city we are in now, then realize it’s Nashville, or technically Brentwood…a suburb just on the outskirts, which doesn’t seem to have much going on. Check my phone for missed calls or texts, pull out the laptop to grab some free wi-fi…wait….my computer says its 9:45 now….huh? Oh, right….we must have driven through a different time zone. Weird. My head drifts off on our day yesterday….which began by waking up in the “band house” which was owned by a bartender/manager at The Hideaway Saloon, where we had played the night before in Louisville, KY. They have a bunch of bunkbeds which they offer for free to traveling bands from out of town such as ourselves….a great bonus. They had no electricity as did most other areas of Kentucky due to a passing storm the week before, so we walked in the night before by way of candle light, which was a little spooky, but a lot of fun. We packed up our things, left a thank you sticky for Jim on one of the bed posts, and piled into the van. First stop, food and coffee, second stop, Nashville, TN.

Ryan: I woke up on a fold out couch bed this morning. The frame didn’t support the mattress in the top right corner so found myself half under the coach on occasion. Just showered up and we’re checking out the city of Nashville. All these southern cities seemed so far away a month ago, and now that I’m here I feel like I could have lived here my whole life. Everyone is so welcoming. I’d like to get into it more but the fellas have stolen my shoe while Im typing this blog and are trying to punt it across the parking lot. It’s so hot out. I’m gonna leave it out.

Boston to Austin: Nashville, TN (out of gas)

NASHVILLE, TN – Hey folks. Just got to Nashville this afternoon. And found out that Nashville, as well as parts of Alabama, have little or no gas and aren’t getting it any time soon. Luckily we were able to fill up right before the pumps at one particular station were emptied and shut down.
